also, i watched the film "lives of others," i'd had it on my "to watch" list for a while but honestly didn't think it would be very good or something i would be interested in. it was an interesting story and pretty well acted. i would recommend it. while watching it i learned that the berlin wall was knocked down the day i was born. ps: the lead, ulrich mühe, looks a lot like kevin spacey. especially kevin spacey in american beauty.

pretty sure i've posted this before, but i'm listening to it right now, as should you.

this is the collage i've been working on. it didn't really turn out the way i wanted. but whatever.

wow, no one told me that if you're thin, fashionable and beautiful move to toronto (actually that's a lie, i have been told that, but still). i've been viewing a lot of torontonian photos recently, and everyone in them is a babe. i've heard the same goes for montreal. everyone i've met from there or has moved there fits this description. so uh...well done teams. speaking of montreal, it seems that about 70% of the people i know went to montreal this summer. the thought never really occurred to me to go there. i've heard great things about it, but when i think of travel, i think of europe, asia or those mega cities in the states i haven't been to yet. i always kind of forget about canada. i know canada is big and beautiful (just how i like my men lol, well i guess tall rather than big....potato potato..that saying does not work when typed..), but it just doesn't seem exotic enough for me i guess. but if i were to go on a canada vacay, i would pick vancouver, montreal or toronto. just because they're different than home.


also, just because i can and i want to, i'm going to share with you the four nobel truths of buddhism and the eight fold path, which are the basic concepts behind buddhism.

four noble truths:
1)in every life and all aspects of life, there is suffering.
2) suffering is caused by desire or attachment
3) to end suffering, one must cease any desire/attachment
4) in order to be able to overcome desire/attachment, it is necessary to follow the eight fold path.

Eight fold path centers on the idea of right or moral living and includes:
1) right view: realization that one can achieve true happiness by following the teachings of the buddha
2) right thought: focusing on the positive to overcome difficulties
3) right speech: always telling the truth and not saying bad things about others.
4) right action: never killing, stealing, being jealous. perform good acts and help others
5) right work: doing work that will not harm any living creature
6) meditation: training your mind to concentrate and find peace from within
7) right goals: loving and helping others
8) right awareness: never letting your body control your mind; knowing when to say no.

it all kind of seems like common sense, but it seems that we forget about it because not everyone does these things. i like that in buddhism, everything is very positive and everything you do is to help others and not cause harm.
i think the research project i do for this course is going to be on the bamiyan buddha's. in 2001 the taliban blew up two ancient buddha statues. the interesting thing about this, is that one of the staples in buddhism, is not to be attached to material things. i'm going to research what the reactions of buddhists were to the destruction of the buddhas.

school update

so far i'm liking my classes well enough.

-modern to contemporary:
the subject is interesting, but the professor is really random. i try to take notes (and i would say i'm a pretty good note taker), but i leave the 3 hour class with maybe 5 words scribbled on the page and no idea what any of them have to do with anything. she also has this really frail shaky sounding voice that is hard to focus on. i think she knows what she's talking about, but i'm lost and have no idea. the pictures are cool though.

-survey in asian art: i took this one last minute because i needed another course. i didn't expect to like it, but the prof is really good and the class is a lot more than i expected. so far we've learned about buddhism which i found super interesting. it's all so positive and pretty much the opposite of what you see daily in our western materialistic society.

-death and concepts of the future: this class has not much to do with concepts of the future and everything to do with death. it's interesting because a lot of the images he show relate to/are the same as images i saw in an art history course i took last year (death in the middle ages, or something like that). also i met some people on orientation week that i sit with now so that's nice. the prof i like a lot. i've had him before. he's kind of arrogant, but it's completely fine because he's also really funny. also, he works in chicago style which i love, it's so much easier to cite things this way.

-byzantine art and architecture: honestly i skipped this first class because i already had the prof and knew that first lectures are just going over the syllabus and things. i'm going to it tomorrow and am assuming i'll like it, just like i have with the other 3 or 4 classes of his i've been in.

-intro to psych: found out on the first class that this course is mostly online and the in class lectures only last about 20-30 minutes. last class the TA told us we only have to come one of the days of the week. so now i only go on thursdays. the tutorials seem like a waste of time. she doesn't even really review what is said in the online lectures. whatever, i think it will be a generally easy course (it's a 1st year course i'm taking for my social sciences requirement). at least it should pump up my g.p.a which is always lovely.

my dream last night brought me to an interesting conclusion. i think i made a decision i didn't know i was contemplating.


i'm working on a collage thing based off a collage i'd seen on doodlers anonymous that i posted on here a while ago. it's actually kind of exactly the same, other than word changes. either way, so far i like how it's turning out. i'll post it when i'm done.
