i thought i understood it

I thought I understood it
That I could grasp it
But I didn’t
Not really
I knew the smudgeness of it
The pink-slippered-all-containered-semi-precious eagerness of it
I didn’t realize it would sometimes be more than whole
The wholeness was a rather luxurious idea
Because its the halves that halve you in half
Didn’t know
Don’t know about the in between bits
The gore-y bits of you
And gore-y bits of me

i recently watching the movie jack goes boating with philip seymour hoffman . he was in the movie...i didn't watch the movie WITH him, that would just be weird.
any who...
it was okay. it had it's moments. it's basically about p.s.h's character jack, who's really awkward, and his relationship with an equally awkward woman named connie who seems to get groped a lot by random men on trains and things....i liked it enough. there was one quote from the film, right at the very end, that i liked. it's simple, and hardly worth quoting, but i just felt something for it. so, here it is:

(the characters are talking about swimming and such)

Connie: I knew you'd be good.
Jack: I am for you.

told you, hardly worth quoting, but maybe you felt what i felt too. it was just a sweet couple moment that everyone has in a relationship, that make you smile and feel like you fit. feeling like you're good for someone, and that they are good for you, that you're meant to be together, whether it's for a short time or a long time, it's always nice.

side note: the film had a great soundtrack. a good soundtrack can make an okay film turn towards good or great.

side note number 2: i dunno why, but philip seymour hoffman kind of creeps me out.

watch or be watched

this looks strange.
i'd like to see it.

i watched this one tonight. wasn't too sure how i felt about it until the very end.
i think i liked it.

waking life. all about dreams and consciousness. the perfect movie to capture my interest.

i haven't seen a scanner darkly yet, but i will. i started reading the book a while back, but didn't finish it for one reason or another.

i really like a lot of films directed by richard linklater. these films include: dazed and confused, before sunrise, waking life, and before sunset. watch 'em if you haven't seen them. (tape and a scanner darkley are also by linklater.)

your heart is filled with unwashed socks.

well, as it goes, christmas is coming, so the radio is bombarded with christmas songs. one song that i don't think i'll ever get sick of hearing is the song from how the grinch stole christmas. i actually listened to the lyrics today and came to realise that if i ever need to name call someone, i can just pick-up any line from this song and i'd come off as mighty clever.

you're a mean one mr. grinch,
you really are a heel
you're as cuddly as a cactus, you're as charming as an eel.
mr. grinch,
you're a bad banana with a greasy black peel

you're a monster mr. grinch,
your heat's an empty hole.
your brain is full of spiders, you've got garlic in your soul,
mr grinch.
i wouldn't touch you with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole.

you're a vile one mr grinch.
you have termites in your smile,
you have all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile,
mr.grinch.
given the choice between the two of you, i'd take the seasick crocodile.

your a foul one, mr grinch.
you're a nasty-wasty-skunk!
your heart is full of unwashed socks, your soul is full of gunk,
mr ginch.
the three words that best describe you are as follows, and i quote; "stink, stank, stunk!"

you're a rotter mr grinch.
your the king of sinful sots.
your hearts a dead tomato splotched with mouldy purple spots,
mr grinch.
your soul is an appalling dump heap, over-flowing with the most disgraceful assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable, mangled up in tangled up knots.

you nauseate me, mr grinch,
with a nauseous super nos.
your a crooked jerky jockey
and you drive a crooked hos,
mr grinch.

you're a three decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich
with parsnip sauce.

i might believe in things that you don't think are real

sometimes movies and books can make me feel incredibly heartbroken.

the film that made me ache today: one week.

some songs from the soundtrack:

imaginary bars - great lake swimmers

hard road - sam roberts

calendar girl - stars

a million dollars - joel plaskett

the great escape - patrick watson

pacifist's anthem - the sun parlour players

clap clap clap

neat.

at home. sick. eating lucky charms.

saw inglorious bastards yesterday, it was alright. very quentin tarantino.
started reading on the road by jack kerouac. about a chapter or two in so can't say too much about it yet.
also started reading fragile things by neil gaimen which is a collection of poems and short stories. so far all of the ones i've read have been pretty dark. i really like his style of writing.

i also picked up white oleander from the library. i've seen the movie several times, and books are almost always better than the film, so i thought i'd give it a read.

i'm on another reading binge.

i was home sick yesterday as well and watched 28 days later again. i had forgotten how good it is. it's actually incredibly well done.

my one complaint about the breakfast club is the coupling that happens at the end.
i can kind of understand andrew and allison pairing up, because we see that they bond over their parent issues and you can see them sticking up for one another throughout the movie. plus, allison gets a makeover and is now conventionally pretty so andrew's all up on it.
but bender and claire? what? he's literally such a dick to her the whole time. you can tell that he's attracted to her and wants her attention and she kind of digs his bad boy attitude, but still, he just makes her cry and insults her nonstop. i dunno, maybe it's just me, but i've seen this movie probably close to 40 times, and i have yet to witness the moment they fall for each other...
that being said though...i'm still insanely attracted to john bender.

john bender

it's that time again.

tea.
knit.
breakfast club.

sounds like a good sunday evening to me.

oh my darlin

hmm. i had no idea "Oh my darling, Clementine" was about this:

In a cavern, in a canyon,
Excavating for a mine
Dwelt a miner forty niner,
And his daughter Clementine

Oh my darling, Oh my darlin,
Oh my darling Clementine
Thou art lost and gone forever,
Dreadful sorry, Clementine

Light she was and like a fairy,
And her shoes were number nine,
Wearing boxes, without topses,
Sandals were for Clementine.

She drove ducklings to the water
Ev’ry morning just at nine,
Hit her foot against a splinter,
Fell into the foaming brine.

Ruby lips above the water,
Blowing bubbles, soft and fine,
But, alas, I was no swimmer,
So I lost my Clementine.

How I missed her! How I missed her,
How I missed my Clementine,
But I kissed her little sister,
I forgot my Clementine.

Then the miner, forty niner
Soon began to peak and pine
Thought he ought to join his daughter
Now he's with his Clementine

In a churchyard near the canyon
Where the myrtle doth entwine
There grows roses and the posies
Fertilized by Clementine

In my dreams she still doth haunt me
Robed in garments, soaked in brine
Then she rises from the waters
And I kiss my Clementine

now that i know the full lyrics to this song, the name choice for kate winslet's character in eternal sunshine of the spotless mind is much more significant. (and no, i don't think it is a coincidence, because they make reference to the song in the film). i really like that.

there is no R in jemaine

i saw dinner for schmucks tonight. i thought it was going to be incredibly stupid and bad, but it was actually decently funny. it was really stupid and ridiculous, but in a way that worked. steve carrel's character was the most annoying person ever though, which lead to funny moments, but i wanted to punch him in the face for the majority of the film and he almost made me want to get up and leave.
jemaine clement played an egotistical horny artist. and i'm not sure why, but i was really attracted to him. i'm not even joking. his character was a douche, but damn, he was lookin gooooooood. i've always had a bit of a crush on him though....so i may be a bit biased...full lips, dark hair, light eyes, super tall, and funny? yes please.

i put some more holes in my head. i got both tragus piercings done.
i like them! my new-piercing-itch has been scratched.
-------------

in other news, i saw inception. really well done!

tonight i might be going to see exit through the gift shop which is a documentary by banksy. i'll let you know how that goes if the plan doesn't fall through.
----------------

i finished that book i think was called "second hand"...it was ok. i wouldn't recommend it, but it was fine. it wasn't about very much. pretty much this guy who owns a second hand shop falls in love (really quickly might i add) with this girl who comes into his shop who happens to fancy him as well. she helps him overcome his mom's death and he helps her get over her commitment issues and her depression because of working at a vet's clinic and putting several animal's down a day. yup. that's pretty much the entire story. they also go to mexico for the day of the dead celebration. there's a lot of chapters where the main character richard aka junk, goes to yard sales and estate sales and describes all this "neat junk" he picks up. so for a lot of the book, you're reading about garage sales. hmm.

also, i just started to read a scanner darkly. i'm only on chapter 2, so i can't say much yet. so far it's about drugs, and i just got introduced to a drug cop.
------------------------

summer course is going well. quiz 1: 90%, quiz 2: 93%, research paper: 80%. all i have is the final exam left. i'm hoping for a 90% again. i'll find out wednesday!

here are some songs by arthur russel i like:

the brothers bloom.
i just watched it. i really really enjoyed it for the first few acts, but then the film started to mess with me and by the end of the film, i had decided i didn't like it that much. the ending made sense and fit well with the film, but it changed the tone of the movie. basically i liked it until it started to get too serious. also it felt like it should have ended way before it did.

the female characters took the cake in this film. although the character bang bang pretty much didn't speak, she was hilarious. obviously i fell in love with adrien brody's character too, but then sort of fell out of love with him by the end.

huh. i thought i saw joseph gordon-levett at one point in the background of the film and i got really excited, but then he didn't show up again so i thought i must be imagining things. just did a little research and i was right, he made a dialogue-less cameo. apparently the cast of brick (joseph gordon-levett, nora zehetner and noah segan) are all in that party scene and the director stuck them in because they were visiting the set at the time and he found it sort of fitting to have the cast of one con movie colliding in a party of con artists in another con film. intriguing.

tears for fun?

why do we do things that we know will make us cry? is it a girl thing or an everyone thing? i ask this because i'm reading a book right now that was recommended to me with "you'll like it. it's really good, you'll cry for sure." the same has been said during movie recommendations. why is it that if a movie/book will make you cry, it's considered a good thing? i guess it's because its a work of fiction that creates real emotions in you and we all like to live vicariously through characters in books and films. we like to travel away from our lives from time to time, and experience someone else's. but still, why do we choose ones that will make us cry?
when you're upset you might go and listen to sad music or watch a sad movie etc that will make you cry it out rather than make you feel happier.

i'm not meaning to criticize any of this. i'm one of the worst offenders for this. i really do love when books and movies make me cry. i like feeling intense emotions for these make believe characters. i'm just wondering aloud as to why.

what book is making me cry? *sigh* i hate to admit it, but it's dear john. yes, a nicholas sparks novel. all of his stories are the same (this conclusion is based on the notebook (movie), dear john (book) and the last song (which i haven't seen, but know enough about). a boy and girl meet. they're from different sides of the track (rich/poor, trouble maker/saint, etc). they're together for a summer and somehow fall head over heals in love. then they are forced apart and they try to cope without each other, or how to cope with the struggles in their ever changing relationship.
all the stories may be the same, but they do work. everyone can relate to the story in one way or another. i bawled in the notebook. i've already bawled several times in dear john (and i'm only half way through!)

the scene of broken socials

This Movie Is Broken - Trailer from Arts & Crafts on Vimeo.

i'm really excited to be seeing bss in october. i think it will be a great show.
i was reading about this movie in the paper a while ago. they filmed it in one day i believe in real time at a real outdoor bss concert. it looks neat, can't wait to see it.

also, i had another of my epicly odd dreams the other night. i was in a uni class in a big auditorium, then somehow everyone in the class had nurf guns and we were all so excited to be playing with them and we had a full out nurf gun fight and every time we got a hold of a new nurf gun we'd talk about how awesome it was and how we remembered having it in our childhood. then somehow the mood of the dream shifted and i don't really remember much of this, but there was something to do with protecting retainers and power rangers and a gummie bear army? in a dream i had last night i was wearing my night retainer thing (which i don't actually often wear, though i should because i grind/clench my teeth at night and wake up with a sore jaw more often than not) and i had broken it somehow in my sleep and was spitting out all of the pieces and it was like my teeth were all falling out, but i'm not sure if they really were or if it was just retainer bits.

celebrity

i watched the movie celebrity this morning just because i saw a preview for it and saw that leonardo dicaprio was in it and was looking fine. he was maybe in the film for ten minutes. but they were a great ten minutes. i watched him throw a huge hissy fit, almost get arrested, gamble, do coke, then have an orgy. his character was a total creep and prick. but i love him.
young leonardo was so attractive looking. now he's kind of eh (i think his head got bigger. and i mean literally, not metaphorically). but i'm still so so attracted.

not gonna lie...i may just have to work my way through leo's filmography this summer (not counting tv appearances or super tiny bit parts aka uncredited or 2 second screen time parts).
let's see what i have to work with (i've already seen most of them, i'll bold the ones i've seen):

Inception (2010)
Shutter Island (2010)
Revolutionary Road (2008) (i've seen the last 30 min of this one, but should will watch it in full)
Body of Lies (2008)
Blood Diamond (2006)
The Departed (2006)

The Aviator (2004)
Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Gangs of New York (2002)

Don's Plum (2001)
The Beach (2000/I)
Celebrity (1998)
The Man in the Iron Mask (1998/I)
Titanic (1997)

Marvin's Room (1996)
Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Total Eclipse (1995)
The Basketball Diaries (1995)
The Quick and the Dead (1995)
The Foot Shooting Party (1994)
What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
This Boy's Life (1993) (i may have seen this one actually)

every single movie of his that i've seen so far i've really liked, or at least liked his bit in it.

come out come out where ever you are.

in other news. yesterday i went to the zoo. the day before that i frolicked in a park. because of those incidents i am COVERED in mosquito bites. my legs and ankles especially. my limbs make my look like i have the chicken pox. I AM SO ITCHY. i don't think i've ever been attacked this badly in one shot! i've covered myself in calamine lotion to stop the itch but it's not working very well. i'm in long pants and a long sleeved shirt so i don't scratch. it's almost unbearable. what i would give to have ten hands scratching at all the itchy spots all at once. *sigh*

also. the other day i finally saw gangs of new york. what an awesome movie. nothing like i thought it was going to be. daniel day lewis is a really great actor. as is leonardo dicaprio. though leo always acts with a furrowed brow. i also watched the usual suspects. decent movie, but i guessed the ending pretty early on. i love kevin spacey. he kind of plays similar characters all the time. sometimes he's the good guy, sometimes he's the bad guy. my favorite performance of his is in american beauty.

i loved all the costumes for this film.

four very different characters. jack slavin - the ballad of jack and rose (weird, but decent movie). daniel plainview - there will be blood (great movie). guido contini - nine (i didn't like this movie at all, but the girl i saw it with loved it). bill 'the butcher' cutting - gangs of new york (like i said, great, great movie).

side note: as you can see i changed the layout. i was sick of the videos not fitting. ta-da. problem solved.

three things to say:

a) i'm happy

b) yesterday at work while i was on my break i went to the washroom (don't stop reading that's not the story!) and then i walked around the mall a tad and back to my store. when i got back i was informed that my dress was tucked into the front of my tights. hah. what a dope. i like how no one told me and i wandered around like that in public for at least ten minutes. also, how the hell did i tuck it into the front of my tights?

c) girls out there (and dudes i guess too), have you ever seen the movie fear with reese witerspoon and mark wahlberg? what a good movie. it's all about obsessive/creepy boyfriends. i've seen it at least 5 times. there's a scene on a roller coaster that's kind of hot actually. and mark wahlberg is pretty sexy in it...although he turns out to be a maniac. watch it.

(he looks like a douche in both of these, but he's still pretty sexy. and normally i'm not attracted to the muscly type...but for the 90's version of mark wahlberg i'll make an exception).

ALSO has anyone seen the mothman prophecies? i've been told it's creepy and disturbing by a few people, which of course makes me want to watch it. any other opinions on it?

ALSO (k this is more than three now i realise..) what did you think of the new alice in wonderland? i just watched it the other night. i found it pretty corny. i think johnny depp did a great job as the mad hatter, but there were some really lame parts on it. aka the dancing scene. it's like they threw in lame bits to make kids laugh although i wouldn't really say kids were the target audience. thoughts?

before after inbetween

i think love really fucks some people up.

this week i watched both before sunrise and before sunset. fantastic films. they made my heart absolutely explode. i've said it before and i'll say it again, i think the reason i love films, music and books so much, is that they help you escape, and can actually make you feel what you feel when you're in love. at least a little bit.

here's part of a scene from before sunrise i LOVE LOVE LOVED. (maybe don't read it if you haven't seen either film. if this is the case, go watch them. NOW):

Celine: "I was thinking...for me it's better I don't romanticize things as much anymore.
I was suffering so much all the time.
I still have lots of dreams, but they're not in regard to my love life.
It doesn't make me sad,it's just the way it is."

Jesse: "Is that why you're in a relationship
with somebody who's...never around?"

C: "Yes, obviously, I can't deal with the day to day life of a relationship.
Yeah, we have, you know, this exciting time together and then he leaves and I miss him, but at least I'm not dying inside.
When someone is always around me, I'm like suffocating!"

J: "No, wait, you just said that you need to love and be loved..."

C: "Yeah, but when I do, it quickly makes me nauseous!
It's a disaster...
I mean, I'm really happy only when I'm on my own.
Even being alone...
it's better than...
sitting next to a lover and feeling lonely.
It's not so easy for me to be a romantic.
You start off that way, and, after you've been screwed over a few times...
You... you forget about all your delusional ideas, and you just take what comes into your life.
That's not even true, I haven't been...
screwed over, I've just had too many...
bla relationship. They weren't mean, they cared for me, but...
they was no real...
connection, or excitement.
At least, not from my side."

J: "God, I'm sorry, is it...
Is it really that bad? It's not, right?"

C: "You know... it's not even that, I was...
I was fine.
Until I read your fucking book! It stirred shit out from you,
It reminded me how...
genuinely romantic I was, how I had so much hope in things and...
now it's like...
I don't believe in anything that relates to love, I don't feel things for people anymore.
In a way...
I put all my romanticism into that one night and I was never able to feel all this again.
Like...
somehow this night took things away from me and...
I expressed them to you and you took them with you!
It made me feel cold, like if love wasn't for me!"

J: "I... I don't believe that. I don't believe that."

C: "You know what? Reality and love are almost contradictory for me.
It's funny...
Every single one of my ex-es...
they're now married!
Man go out with me, we break up, and then they get married!
And later they call me to thank me for teaching them what love is, and...
that I taught them to care and respect women!"

J: "I think I'm one of those guys."

C: "You know, I want to kill them! Why didn't they ask me to marry them? I would have said "No", but at least they could have asked!!!
But it's my fault, I know that it's my fault, because...
I never felt it was the right man.
Never!
But what does it mean the right man? The love of your life?
The concept is absurd, the idea that we can only be
complete with another person is...
EVIL!
Right?"

J: "Can I talk?"

C: "You know, I guess I've been heart broken too many times.
And then I recovered. So now, you know, from the starts, I make no effort.
Because I know exactly what hap..."

J: "You can't do that. You can't do that, you can't live your life trying to avoid pain,
at the expense of en..."

C: "Ok, you know what?
Loose our words!
I've gotta... I've gotta
get away from you...
Stop the car, I want to get out!"

J: "No, no, no,
don't... don't get out..."

C: "You know, it's being around you..."

J: "Keep talking..."

C: "Don't touch me! You know, I wanna get on a cab...Monsieur...Monsieur, aretes vous! Non, non, c'est bon, aux faux la!"

J: "No, no, no, don't, keep going...
No, listen, I'm just so happy...
thank you, just keep going...
All right. Look, I'm just so happy, all right...
to be with you. I am. I'm so glad you
didn’t' forget about me."

C: "No, I didn't...
and it pisses me off, ok?
You come here to Paris, all romantic, and married.
Ok?
Screw you!
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to get you, or anything.
I mean, all I need is married man!
There's been so much water under the bridge, it's...
it's not even about you anymore, it's about that time, that moment in time, that is forever gone, I don't know!"

J: "You... you say all that, but you didn't even remember having sex. So..."

C: "Of course I remember it..."

J: "You did?"

C: "Yes! Women pretend things like that."

J: "They do?"

C: "Yeah, what was I supposed to say? That I remember the wine in the park, and...
us looking about the stars fading away as the sun came up!
We had sex twice, you idiot!"

J: "All right, you know what? I'm just...
happy to see you, even if... you've become an angry, maniac depressive activist.
I still like you, I still enjoy being around you!
And I feel the same."

C: "I'm... I'm sorry, I don't know what happened.
I just...
I had to let it all out. I..."

J: "Don't worry about it."

C: "I'm so miserable in my love life,
in my relationship, I always act as...
Like...
you know, I'm detached, but I'm...
I'm dying inside.
I'm dying because I'm so numb, I don't feel pain, or excitement...
I'm not even bitter, I'm just..."

aaaaaaaaaaaand a beautiful song from the film as well:
